“Don’t worry Helen – you won’t feel a thing!” And so began my introduction to skin needling. Why is it that instead of the reassurance intended – those words can strike fear into even the bravest of hearts!
I must admit though, my initial apprehension had been somewhat diminished due to my insistence of three tubes of topical anaesthetic, administered during the previous hour.
Skin needling, hailed as the latest skin renewal technique, claims to restore the healthy youthful appearance of your skin at significantly less cost than other comparable treatments – and with minimal or zero downtime.

It produces similar results to dermabrasion, lasers and deep chemical peels, but it is much less invasive and does not require the removal of the epidermis. The healing time therefore is significantly shorter and there is no post treatment skin sensitivity to UV light. It’s suitable for all skin types and can even be used to treat the fragile skin around the eyes, mouth and neck.

Microneedle therapy is a relatively new technology, which combines the ancient Chinese acupuncture techniques with contemporary mesotherapy practice.

Skin needling has long been used by dermatologists in the form of collagen induction therapy (CIT) to fade scars and generally as an anti ageing treatment.

More recently smaller sizes of micro-needles have been recognized for their capacity to dramatically increase the absorption of topical formulations i.e. antioxidants, growth factors, soluble collagen etc leading to a significant increase in their efficacy.

Collagen Induction Therapy is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical damage such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. Immediately after an injury occurs to the skin our body reuses the damaged collagen and elastin fibres as well as other damaged skin components to produce new ones. Skin needling allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating micro-“injuries” in the skin which trigger new collagen synthesis, yet does not pose the risk of permanent scarring. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin.

After about 30-35 minutes, and in all honesty only a tiny bit of toe-curling, my treatment was complete. Feeling a little like a pin cushion and slightly concerned over the prospect of a full diary of clients with obviously no chance of whipping out a make-up bag to cover the worst, I hastily headed for a mirror but was met with great relief by high colour, not unlike windburn from a day at sea and a definite plumpness ofhe skin.

Over the next two days, there was some sensitivity, tightness and a small amount of peeling – all barely noticeable – yet the positive effects, which can be seen after 6-8 weeks following the procedure, continue for up to a year.

I was given a personal dermaroller and a course of anti-oxidants, retinol and growth factors and over the last few weeks have een diligently rollering twice a week – usually during X Factor, much to the children’s horror. Though it’s still early days, I remain enthused and positive over the results and feel confident in recommending and practicing Micro-Needling Therapy here at Loved.

Love, Helen
